UPDATE: 9:43 a.m.: The lockdown has been lifted at the U.S. Capitol Building after report of person with “something that looked like a firearm.”

Below, previous story:

*The U.S. Capitol building is on lockdown due to police activity, according to multiple reports.

The Senate sergeant at arms issued the lockdown alert for the building and visitor center just after 9 a.m. local time, saying police activity has been reported. Everyone inside is being asked to shelter in place.

Capitol police say they are searching for an individual but details have been sketchy. One officer outside the Capitol told an ABC affiliate that police are responding to reports of woman who may have a gun. NBC4 is also reporting that they’re searching for “a person who got past with something that looked like a firearm.”

Folks inside have been told to close, lock and stay away from external doors and windows. No one will be permitted to enter or exit until directed by U.S. Capitol Police.

The House press gallery staff says House members met briefly while on lockdown and immediately recessed. Voting that was scheduled to begin at 9:15 a.m. was postponed, gallery staff said.
