*(Sacramento)Assemblymember Mike A. Gipson (D-Carson) successfully defended a resolution commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Watts Revolt against criticism by several members of the Assembly Judiciary committee. Assembly Concurrent Resolution (ACR) 92, which passed by an 8-2 bipartisan vote, is part of a series of statewide and local events this summer to acknowledge the historical significance of the Watts civil unrest of 1965.

“ACR 92 shares the narrative on civil unrest in Watts from the community’s perspective by addressing the foundations of injustice that led to the revolt and also celebrating the peaceful triumphs that came in response,” states Gipson.

During testimony, a Republican member of the committee criticized ACR 92 as a celebration of riots, stating that the resolution should instead celebrate families, “that didn’t succumb to the savagery.”

“It is not the intent of this resolution to celebrate or condone riots in any way, and I find it regrettable that a member of the Assembly chose to use words that dehumanized a group of people,” states Gipson. “It is that precise attitude towards others that this measure, like many others that recognize tragic events of social unrest, seeks to draw attention towards. Our future will crumble if not built on a foundation of lessons learned from past events.”

ACR 92 will be heard on the Assembly Floor this Thursday morning – July 16th, 2015 at 9:00am. The presentation will be televised on the California Channel, or can be viewed online on the CalChannel website – https://www.calchannel.com/live-webcast/.

Mike Gipson represents the 64th Assembly District. The district includes the cities of Carson, Compton, Gardena, Harbor Gateway, Lynwood, North Long Beach, Rancho Dominguez, South Los Angeles, Torrance, Watts/Willowbrook and Wilmington.
