*A Virginia nurse has been charged with malicious wounding and felony child abuse following an investigation into unexplained injuries among Black newborns in a neonatal intensive care unit at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital.
Erin Elizabeth Ann Strotman was arrested for breaking the bones of three Black premature newborns and is being investigated for additional victims, as it is suspected she may have harmed other babies in the past.
Authorities began investigating in 2023 after noticing unexplained fractures in several infants, prompting a review of surveillance footage involving at least seven cases. The charges stem from a specific incident in November 2024, though earlier cases from 2023 and 2024 are also being revisited.
The 26-year-old has been charged with malicious wounding and felony child abuse in connection to the case of one baby. The family spoke to local media after Strotman was booked into custody on Jan. 3. Watch the clip above.
Multiple NICU babies from the same Virginia hospital were diagnosed with ‘unexplainable fractures’ in 2023 and 2024.

“We appreciate the families’ and public’s patience as we work as thoroughly and expeditiously as possible to investigate every piece of evidence in connection to these cases,” Henrico Chief of Police Eric D. English said in a statement shared last Friday.
According to a report from regional outlet WRIC, three babies sustained fractures last year, while a separate incident the previous year involved injuries to four other infants. NICU admissions were temporarily halted during the probe.
“We are both shocked and saddened by this development in the investigation and are focused on continuing to care for our patients and providing support to our colleagues who have been deeply and personally impacted by this investigation,” hospital reps said in a statement.
“We are grateful to those colleagues, who have dedicated their professional lives to the care and safety of our patients, as well as to law enforcement and the other agencies who have worked aggressively and tirelessly with us on this investigation,” the reps added.
The hospital confirmed that Strotman was “a former employee.” Her next court appearance is set for March.
