*United Airlines has introduced a new policy requiring passengers to wear headphones when listening to audio or video during flights. The update, included in the airline’s contract of carriage, makes failure to comply grounds for removal from the aircraft or even a permanent ban, USA Today reports.
The rule gives the airline the authority to refuse transport on a temporary or permanent basis or remove passengers at any point during the flight. United said the change aligns with existing Wi-Fi guidelines that encourage headphone use and cited the expansion of Starlink in-flight internet as a reason for making the requirement explicit.
“Passengers who fail to use headphones while listening to audio or video content” are now specifically noted as potential candidates for refusal of transport. The airline emphasized that safety considerations are central to the rule, meaning enforcement may be necessary to protect all travelers aboard.

United offers free earbuds when available to ensure compliance without interrupting entertainment.
Other offenses that could result in removal or a permanent ban include wearing obscene, or offensive clothing, violating the no-smoking policy, or making videos or phone calls while the aircraft doors are closed, taxiing for takeoff, or in flight.
While headphone etiquette has long been expected on flights, this update formalizes it as a mandatory policy. Travelers on United should be aware that ignoring the rule could lead to serious consequences, including being permanently barred from flying with the airline.
The move underscores United’s effort to maintain a safe and considerate environment for all passengers as in-flight entertainment and internet options continue to expand.
