*Toni Braxton is bringing her 2000 hit song to the screen with Lifetime’s new movie, “He Wasn’t Man Enough,” which debuted on Nov. 20. The Grammy-winning singer not only stars in the film but also serves as executive producer, helping shape a story that celebrates resilience and the strength of female friendships.
“I’m a hopeless romantic,” Braxton tells PEOPLE. “I’m always looking for love. And I found out [now] that I’m older, that romance is never over. It’s ageless. We always think it’s such a young person thing. And I’ve learned that it’s not, it’s at any age. You can find romance or love or partnership, anything like that.”
The film, part of Lifetime’s “Love of a Lifetime” programming, follows bestselling author Mel Montgomery (Braxton) as she discovers her boyfriend Richard (Thomas Cadrot) has been unfaithful. When she learns Richard is engaged to her former college friend Monica (Essence Atkins), Mel and Monica set aside past differences. With the help of best friend Candy (Yvette Nicole Brown), the two women confront his betrayal together.
Drawing inspiration from Braxton’s iconic song of the same title, “He Wasn’t Man Enough” emphasizes solidarity over revenge. As Braxton explains, the story focuses on resilience rather than retaliation, offering a positive message about navigating heartbreak. In her 2000 music video, Braxton reassured her ex-boyfriend’s new partner that she had no intention of trying to get him back, a theme echoed in the film.
“It always works out. Sometimes you’re mad about things today and then tomorrow you’re like, ‘Why did I take it all so seriously?’” Braxton adds. “Try to be happy, try to love, love is so important.”
Braxton credits much of her perspective on love and family to her close-knit roots. “I come from a sisterhood, a sistership. I’m one of five, we lost one [Traci Braxton]. But still she’s with us. And so that matters. Sometimes a situation can come and break that up or make your family situation, your sisterhood stress,” she says. “Sometimes you get it right girls, sometimes you don’t, but you gotta keep living.”
Looking ahead, Braxton and Atkins will headline another Lifetime project, “Breathe Again,” set for 2026 and co-starring Cree Summer. The story follows three reality dating show contestants—Jennifer (Braxton), Vanessa (Summer), and Evelyn (Atkins)—who each leave the competition with broken hearts. Their shared experiences turn into a deep friendship as they rebuild their lives across Los Angeles and Seattle.
Braxton serves as producer on both projects, alongside Tanya Lopez and Kenneth Crear, with Stan Brooks directing and also serving as executive producer.
