*Gilead is coming back into focus as Hulu prepares to launch “The Testaments,” its long-awaited sequel to “The Handmaid’s Tale.” Based on Margaret Atwood’s follow-up novel, the series is set to premiere in April with a three-episode debut.
Per THR, “The Testaments” comes from many of the creative forces behind “The Handmaid’s Tale” and continues the story after the original show’s conclusion. Ann Dowd returns to the franchise in her Emmy-winning role as Aunt Lydia, while Elisabeth Moss serves as an executive producer following her work in front of the camera on the original series.
Although Moss has not been announced as part of the cast, her character, June Osborne, remains an important presence in the story. The sequel shifts its focus to the next generation, introducing Agnes, also known as Hannah, June’s daughter, portrayed by Chase Infiniti. The cast also includes Lucy Halliday, Rowan Blanchard, Mattea Conforti, Isolde Ardies, Shechinah Mpumlwana, and Birva Pandya.

“She threw herself back and she couldn’t walk away from her daughter, so June is still doing her job. She’s still doing what she was doing in The Handmaid’s Tale [along with] Luke [O-T Fagbenle] and Moira [Samira Wiley] — they’re still out there somewhere ringing the bell to get Hannah back,” the creator of both series told THR.
“Is June influencing The Testaments? Absolutely. She’s out there. She’s out there trying to get Hannah back. Do we see her? I would love to see her. But let’s expand into how the people who survive are rebelling in all these different areas. It looks like Gilead is just rife with people who really hate it. So let’s see more of them.”
“The Testaments” centers on the lives of young girls growing up inside Gilead’s rigid power structure, particularly those being trained to become wives.
The official synopsis states: “An evolution of The Handmaid’s Tale, The Testaments is based on Margaret Atwood’s novel of the same name and is a dramatic coming-of-age story set in Gilead. The series follows young teens Agnes, dutiful and pious, and Daisy, a new arrival and convert from beyond Gilead’s borders. As they navigate the gilded halls of Aunt Lydia’s elite preparatory school for future wives, a place where obedience is instilled brutally and always with divine justification, their bond becomes the catalyst that will upend their past, their present, and their future.”
“The Testaments” will stream on Hulu in the U.S., on Hulu on Disney+ for bundle subscribers, and on Disney+ internationally.
