*Taylor Swift appeared on “The Tonight Show” with Jimmy Fallon to address rumors about declining the Super Bowl Halftime Show due to a dispute over performance footage ownership.
The pop icon clarified that these rumors misrepresent the conversations between her team and representatives from Roc Nation, Jay-Z’s company, which has managed the halftime show since 2019.
“Here’s the thing,” Swift said, Complex reports. “Jay-Z has always been very good to me. Our teams are very close. They sometimes will call and ask how I feel about it — and that’s not an official offer or a conference-room conversation. We’re always able to tell him the truth, which is that I am in love with a guy who does that sport on that actual field.”
Referring to her fiancé, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, Swift described the intensity of watching him play. “That is violent chess. That is gladiators without swords. That is dangerous. The whole season I am locked in on what that man is doing on the field. Can you imagine if he’s out there every single week putting his life on the line, doing this very dangerous, very high-pressure, high-intensity sport, and I’m like, ‘I wonder what my choreo should be. I think we should do two verses of ‘Shake It Off’ into ‘Blank Space’ into ‘Cruel Summer’ would be great.'”
Swift clarified that her decision wasn’t related to Kelce. “This has nothing to do with Travis—he would love for me to do it. I’m just too locked in.”
Earlier reports confirmed that the deal with the NFL fell through over disagreements about ownership and compensation. According to Rob Shuter, negotiations collapsed when the league refused to meet Swift’s conditions. “Taylor knows her worth. She knows the kind of ratings she brings, the global attention she commands,” an insider explained, highlighting her choice to prioritize her value.

The NFL’s long-standing tradition of unpaid performances clashed with Swift’s request for full ownership of her performance and advertising slots, which the league denied. A music executive noted, “She wasn’t asking for favors, she was asking for respect.” Another insider said, “She wasn’t about to hand that over for free,” adding, “Taylor Swift doesn’t need exposure.”
Swift’s global influence makes her a singular draw for any event. “She wanted a deal that reflected her value,” an insider emphasized. Discussions with the NFL showed a disconnect: “They expect the biggest artists in the world to do it for ‘exposure,’” one source said. For Swift, the calculation was clear: “The Super Bowl absolutely needs her,” not the other way around.
