As the New York Post reports, the five-song EP, released on November 7, quickly rose to No. 1 on iTunes’ Top 100 Christian and Gospel Albums chart. Two songs from the project, “Find Your Rest” and “Goodbye Temptation,” currently hold the No. 1 and No. 2 spots on Billboard’s Gospel Digital Song Sales chart.
Ray is visually depicted in AI-generated images and videos as a Black man wearing a gold cross necklace, a white collared shirt, a suit, and a tan fedora. His Spotify profile describes him as a “Mississippi-made soul singer carrying a Southern soul revival into the present.”

Solomon Ray is the creation of conservative hip-hop artist Christopher “Topher” Townsend. American singer/songwriter Forrest Frank, whose song “Your Way’s Better” topped Billboard’s Hot Christian Songs earlier this year, criticized the project, stating, “At minimum, AI does not have the Holy Spirit inside of it. So I think that it’s really weird to be opening up your spirit to something that has no spirit.”
Townsend responded, defending the project “as an extension of his creativity,” adding, “so therefore to me it’s art.”
“It’s definitely inspired by a Christian. It may not be performed by one, but I don’t know why that really matters in the end,” Townsend said.
AI-generated music has increasingly appeared on Billboard charts, with at least one AI or AI-assisted artist charting weekly for the past month. Among these acts is Xania Monet, an AI avatar developed by Mississippi songwriter Telisha “Nikki” Jones, who uses the platform Suno to transform her lyrics into full songs. Monet’s single “Let Go, Let God” debuted on a Billboard radio chart, highlighting AI’s growing influence.
The rise of AI music has sparked debate over copyright and artistic authenticity. Critics argue AI models are often trained on copyrighted material without permission, while companies like Universal Music Group are exploring licensing agreements to navigate the legal landscape of AI-generated music.
