*Artificial intelligence-generated music has become a regular presence on Billboard’s charts, with at least one AI or AI-assisted artist appearing each week for the past month.
The publication highlighted this development as a “streak suggesting this trend is quickly accelerating,” marking a significant shift in the music landscape. Among the charting AI acts are Xania Monet, an AI avatar developed by Mississippi songwriter Telisha “Nikki” Jones. We reported earlier that Jones writes her own lyrics and uses the AI music platform Suno to transform them into full songs.
Jones recently signed a multimillion-dollar deal with Hallwood Media, an independent music company founded by former Interscope executive Neil Jacobson. The move represents a major milestone in the music industry’s exploration of artificial intelligence. However, some major labels reportedly backed away from the project, reflecting the ongoing legal uncertainties around AI-generated music.

Xania Monet debuted on a Billboard radio chart after receiving substantial airplay for the single “Let Go, Let God.” Jones argues that her contributions merit copyright protection, noting that she wrote the lyrics and provided substantial human input in composing the music.
The proliferation of AI music has ignited intense controversy within the industry, particularly regarding training data sources. Apps like Suno and Udio face accusations that their AI models were trained on copyrighted material from actual artists without permission. Last year, artists signed an open letter calling on organizations to “cease the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to infringe upon and devalue the rights of human artists.”
Universal Music Group recently announced a licensing agreement with Udio to create an AI-generation platform, following the resolution of a copyright lawsuit between the companies.
Streaming platform Spotify has experienced an influx of AI-generated content, stating that the technology “is unlocking incredible new ways for artists to create music and for listeners to discover it.”
