*Sidney Brown, known in the music world as Omen, passed away at 49, leaving behind a legacy as a Grammy-winning producer.
The Harlem native, discovered deceased in his apartment on September 13, was found by a relative after co-workers grew concerned when he missed a shift, according to his mother, Martha Brown, who spoke to TMZ, The Mirror reports. While the exact date and cause of his death remain undisclosed, tributes from local venues and the music community have poured in, celebrating his contributions.
Brown’s impact resonated deeply at Barawine Harlem, where he worked for over a decade. Their Instagram tribute read: “It is with shock and deep sadness we have heard about the passing of our dear friend Omen Sidney Brown. At Ethyl’s Bar & Restaurant in New York City, where Brown frequently DJed, the staff mourned their loss. Their Instagram post stated: “Tonight we learned of the passing of our longtime DJ, a Friend and Ethyl’s Family Member Omen. We are beyond. Omen has been a major part of what made Ethyl’s beat from the very beginning.”
The statement continued: “Sidney ‘Omen’ Brown was not only a DJ who could get our dance floor jumping, but he was also a Grammy Award Winning Producer who worked with Beyoncé, Lil’ Wayne and please take a minute to listen to the song attached ‘Tell It Like It Is’ which Omen helped write and produce for Ludacris.”
Brown first gained recognition in the late 1990s and early 2000s by producing for members of Roc-A-Fella’s roster. His career reached a defining moment in 2006 with the release of Ludacris’ “Tell It Like It Is.” He went on to work with major artists such as Beyoncé, Drake, and Mýa.
Throughout his career, Brown’s collaborations spanned both hip-hop and R&B, teaming up with artists including Action Bronson, Fabolous, Redman, and Immortal Technique.
