*Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley has declined an invitation to join President Trump’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition.
As The Hill reports, during a Monday press conference, Barkley explained, “A couple months ago, it was brought to my team about the council. So, I’m not really too familiar with it,” adding that his busy schedule led him and his family to decide it was “of best interest to not accept that.”
He expressed surprise at the offer, noting, “I was definitely a little shocked when my name was mentioned.”
The council, established by an executive order, aims to combat childhood obesity, chronic diseases, and inactivity while reinstating the Presidential Fitness Test. It will include up to 30 members, such as NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, former Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor, and athletes like Nick Bosa, Tua Tagovailoa, Harrison Butker, and hockey legend Wayne Gretzky.
Professional golfer Bryson DeChambeau will lead the group. Taylor, enthusiastic about his role, stated at the White House signing, “I’m proud to be on this team. I don’t know what we’re supposed to be doing, but I’m here to serve.”

Barkley’s decision follows previous interactions with Trump, including golfing at Trump’s Bedminster resort and joining him on Air Force One earlier this year. These moments drew some criticism, but Trump praised Barkley, saying, “He’s a great young guy and an incredible football player. Saquon had a season for the ages, running behind the most powerful offensive line in the NFL.”
Despite the commendation, Barkley prioritized his commitments over joining the council.
