*In a recent confrontation, journalist Roland Martin took to social media to address false statements made by actor-singer Tyrese Gibson regarding the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act, also known as S. 937.
The backlash followed Gibson’s interview with civil rights attorney Ben Crump, during which he inaccurately labeled the bill as solely the “Asian Anti-hate Crime Bill,” suggesting that it neglects the struggles of Black and Latino communities.
In his remarks during the interview, Gibson expressed his frustration with President Biden and Vice President Harris, questioning why a similar law hasn’t been enacted to protect Black and Brown individuals.
“There is a crime bill that was signed into law that protects Asians at all costs,” Gibson told Crump. “Where is that same f***ng law to be signed into law when it comes to Black and Brown people? Because what you’re doing is — President Biden and Kamala Harris — what you’re doing is, you’re saying that Black and Brown people will continue to be disposable. That sh** doesn’t make sense.” he stated emphatically.

His comments sparked widespread controversy and drew immediate criticism from Martin, who was keen to set the record straight.
On his social media platforms, Martin emphatically dismissed Gibson’s assertions. He accused the actor of spreading misinformation.
“I’m sick of celebrities talking about public policy and they do no fact-checking. @tyrese did a video claiming Asian Americans received a hate crime bill and Black people did not. That is a 100 [percent] lie,” Martin wrote on Instagram. “I have debunked this lie on #RolandMartinUnfiltered on several occasions. I’ve also debunked the lie that there has never been in American history hate crime bills for African-Americans.”
Martin clarified that the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act, signed into law during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, was designed to address hate crimes against all individuals, not just those of Asian descent.
The COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act emerged from a troubling rise in violent incidents targeting Asian and Pacific Islander communities during the pandemic, but it fundamentally aims to make reporting hate crimes more accessible for all demographic groups. The legislation directs the Department of Justice to expedite the review process for hate crimes while also providing funding for local crime-reduction initiatives.
Moreover, Martin rebutted Gibson’s claims regarding the absence of legislative measures aimed at protecting African Americans. He cited several critical laws, including the Civil Rights Act, the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, and the Emmett Till Antilynching Act, all of which have specific provisions that address crimes impacting Black communities in the United States.
“Tyrese’s statement is simply not true,” Martin tweeted, underscoring the importance of factual accuracy when discussing vital social issues. “There have been THREE hate crime bills passed specifically for African Americans. It’s important to have the facts straight when discussing such critical issues.”
Martin’s intervention highlights the crucial role of accurate information in public discourse, especially regarding policies that can significantly impact marginalized communities. His commitment to dispelling misinformation reflects a broader need for public figures to engage responsibly with issues that affect society at large.

As conversations about race, crime, and legislative protections continue to evolve, voices in the media and entertainment industries need to lend their platforms to informed dialogue rather than perpetuating misconceptions. This incident serves as a reminder of the responsibility that comes with influence and the importance of fact-checking in discussions of public policy.
In an era where misinformation can easily spread through social media, Martin’s efforts to promote accurate information have never been more relevant. He encourages everyone, especially celebrities like Gibson, to advocate for their communities with a foundation built on verified facts, ensuring that all voices are heard and respected in the ongoing fight against hate and injustice.
