*Sony has released the official trailer for “Karate Kid: Legends,” set to hit theaters on May 30.
The film sees Ralph Macchio, reprising his iconic role as Daniel LaRusso from the original 1984 “Karate Kid,” and Jackie Chan returning to the franchise after portraying Mr. Han in the 2010 remake. “The Karate Kid” was a major success in 1984, grossing over $130 million worldwide and helping to popularize karate in the U.S. Macchio last appeared in “The Karate Kid Part III” in 1989. The franchise’s six films have grossed over $600 million globally, and also spawned the hit Netflix series “Cobra Kai.”
Ben Wang (“American Born Chinese”) stars in “Karate Kid: Legends,” portraying a new student named Li Fong, who becomes the latest protege to Daniel and Mr. Han. The story focuses on Li Fong’s move to New York City after a family tragedy, where he is forced to learn karate to avoid troubling situations, according to the film’s description, per ABC News. Wang was selected for the lead role due to his variety of martial arts skills.

“I was the target audience when that movie came out. I was exactly the age of the character,” Wang told Entertainment Weekly. “That whole movie takes place in Beijing, and I’d just come back from living for a year in Beijing. Also, I grew up watching Jackie Chan movies. He is the first memory I have of knowing what an actor is. It was all of my favorite things in one place.”
Ming-Na Wen, Joshua Jackson, and Sadie Stanley are also set to appear in “Karate Kid: Legends.”
The project will be directed by Jonathan Entwistle, with a screenplay by Rob Lieber and produced by Karen Rosenfelt.
