*In the newly released trailer for “Project Hail Mary,” Ryan Gosling takes a solo voyage through the cosmos — or so he thinks.
Directed by “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the sci-fi film adapts Andy Weir’s bestselling 2021 novel and centers on Ryland Grace, a middle-school science teacher unexpectedly thrust into a mission to save humanity. After waking up alone in a spacecraft, with no memory of how he got there, Ryland must confront a star-destroying threat that’s endangering Earth’s sun.
In the film, produced by Amazon MGM, Gosling’s Ryland is quick to point out that he’s out of his depth. “I’m not an astronaut,” he declares in the trailer. “I put that not in astronaut! I’ve never done anything, I’ve never done a space walk — I can’t even moonwalk,” he tells a group of scientists.
Despite his reluctance and lack of training, Ryland’s journey takes a surprising turn when he encounters an alien life form on a parallel mission of survival. What begins as a scientific endeavor morphs into an unlikely partnership. “He’s kinda growing on me,” Ryland admits in a video log. “At least he’s not growing in me, y’know? Which was a concern for a little while.”

The screenplay comes from Drew Goddard, known for “The Martian” and “The Cabin in the Woods,” and the cast includes Sandra Hüller, Lionel Boyce, Ken Leung, and Milana Vayntrub.
“It’s an insanely ambitious story that’s massive in scope and seemed really hard to make and that’s kind of our bag,” Gosling said at April’s CinemaCon, per Elle.com.
He praised the directors’ unique dynamic, saying, “[They] have a singular vision which is weird because there’s two of them. They are only happy if they make you do the very rare and coveted laugh cry.”
Reflecting on his character, Gosling added, “He goes on such a journey as you can see, and this is why you go to the movies. I’m not just saying it because I’m in it, because I’m a producer on it as well.”
“Project Hail Mary” lands in theaters on March 20, 2026. Watch the trailer above.
