Leaked Texts Derail Paul Ingrassia’s High-Profile Nomination
*Whew! That was close. Donald Trump’s nomination of Paul Ingrassia to lead the U.S. Office of Special Counsel exploded just days before his Senate confirmation hearing. The 30-year-old attorney, known for his far-right views, withdrew his name following a wave of backlash.
Yesterday (10-20-25), Politico published a series of leaked messages from a private GOP chat. The texts, filled with racist and antisemitic comments, shattered any remaining support for Ingrassia’s appointment. His confirmation hearing was scheduled for Thursday (10-23-25), but was quickly canceled.
‘Nazi Streak’ Text and Racial Slurs Sparked Bipartisan Outrage
Ingrassia’s messages shocked both Democrats and Republicans. He referred to Martin Luther King Jr. as “the 1960s George Floyd” and called for ending the federal holiday in his honor. He used slurs targeting Black and Asian communities and made inflammatory remarks about minority outreach.
The most damaging quote was his admission of a “Nazi streak” in a May 2024 conversation. Though his lawyer claimed the comments were satire, others in the chat said the tone was serious and consistent with his beliefs.

Senators Across the Aisle Rejected Trump’s Pick
Republican senators openly criticized Ingrassia’s nomination. Sen. Rick Scott said, “I can’t imagine how anybody can be antisemitic in this country.” Sen. Ron Johnson called the nomination “something that should not have gotten this far.”
With the GOP holding only a narrow 8–7 majority on the Homeland Security Committee, three Republican defections meant a likely defeat. Senate Majority Leader John Thune even laughed off the nomination, saying it would not pass.
Democrats Sounded Early Alarms Over Extremism and Loyalty
Democratic Reps. Jamie Raskin and Robert Garcia had been warning the Senate for months. In June 2025, they cited Ingrassia’s “loyalty to Donald Trump over the Constitution” and ties to online extremists.
By October 21, Raskin demanded Ingrassia be removed from his DHS position entirely, calling him a “white supremacist.” His colleagues Bennie Thompson and Garcia echoed concerns about the OSC losing independence.
Ingrassia’s Past Included Conspiracies, Podcasts, and Legal Drama
Ingrassia had a long record of far-right activity. He co-hosted a podcast with his sister promoting conspiracy theories, including false claims about presidential eligibility. He also defended figures like Andrew Tate and Nick Fuentes.
His record included controversial legal stances, like arguing slave owners’ descendants deserved reparations. In another case, he faced a withdrawn sexual harassment complaint that temporarily revoked his DHS access.
Family Intervention Added Drama Before Withdrawal
In a dramatic twist, Ingrassia’s mother, Donna Gallo Ingrassia, made an unannounced visit to Capitol Hill. She knocked on Rep. Raskin’s locked office, hoping to defend her son, but was turned away.
She later approached Garcia’s office, accusing staff of “disparaging” her son and calling for dialogue. Sources described her visit as persistent and emotional, showing the strain the controversy had on the family.
Jewish Groups Condemned Comments While Others Stayed Silent
Organizations like StopAntisemitism strongly condemned Ingrassia’s antisemitic messages. However, the Anti-Defamation League remained silent, reportedly debating internally how to respond to Trump-linked figures.
The silence from key groups added to the tension, especially as antisemitic violence remains a national concern. This lack of unified condemnation raised eyebrows among watchdogs and lawmakers alike.
“I do have a Nazi streak in me from time to time, I will admit it.” He also stressed the need to have “competent white men in positions of leadership.”

Online Reaction Mocked ‘Nazi Streak’ and Holiday Remarks
After Ingrassia’s announcement, social media lit up. His line about a “Nazi streak” and his attacks on Black holidays became viral fodder. One user joked, “Next up: Someone who thinks Juneteenth is a cocktail.”
Trump allies blamed the leaks for “smearing” a loyal pick, but the damage was already done. The failed nomination served as a warning about the power of digital footprints and political vetting failures.
Why the ‘Paul Ingrassia Controversy’ Still Matters
This controversy highlights the risks of prioritizing loyalty over qualifications in key government roles. Ingrassia’s extreme views could have reshaped a federal agency meant to protect whistleblowers.
Though Trump’s team may push for another loyalist, the bipartisan revolt shows there are still limits. Lawmakers and watchdogs remain alert, proving that even in a divided Senate, there are red lines.
