*There’s something about horror films set on the road that instantly creates tension. And “Passenger“ director André Øvredal takes that familiar fear and approaches it in a way that feels much more personal and immersive.
I spoke with André Øvredal about how important camera placement and shot selection were in creating the film’s suspense. Rather than relying on traditional jump scares, he focused on making audiences feel like they were everywhere the characters were. Experiencing every unsettling moment right alongside them.
“My job, of course, is to find a visual language that sustains a certain continuity throughout all these various situations,” said Øvredal.

After the film’s main characters, Maddie and Taylor, survive a devastating car accident. Things quickly take a strange and unsettling turn. What initially feels like a tense survival story. Slowly transforms into something much more supernatural, with each scene becoming increasingly eerie and unpredictable. The film keeps audiences questioning what’s real. And the suspense continues building in a way that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats.
While “Passenger” delivers with that intensity and fear. It also gives audiences characters they actually become invested in. Their relationship adds heart to the story, making the fear hit even harder as they try to navigate everything happening around them together.
Combined with the film’s dark visuals, isolated setting, and growing psychological tension. The movie creates an experience that feels both emotionally grounded and genuinely disturbing.
As the story continues unfolding, the suspense becomes more fascinating with each new twist. Pulling the audience deeper into the mystery surrounding the couple’s accident and the terrifying events that follow.
For viewers who enjoy psychological horror mixed with supernatural elements and emotional storytelling, this film delivers.
“Passenger” from Paramount Pictures is in theaters this Friday, May 22 (2026).
