EUR sat down with Georgina Campbell (plays Ciara) and Ishana Shyamalan (director/writer) for a chat about their new suspenseful horror film, “The Watchers.”
Q: What was it like playing Ciara?
GC: It was great! I read the script and I really loved it. Then I read the book before I had my meeting with Shana (Shyamalan) because I wanted to impress her. The way she’s adapted it into the film is incredible. Then you read the original source material, it’s just a beautiful world that’s built. Then Ciara, I had never really played a character like her. She’s so feminine and soft and fragile and sweet. And I just really enjoyed getting to borrow into her mind.
Q: What type of shows do you like to watch?
GC: I love horror movies. I was just saying I am someone that really looks out for new horror movies to go and watch. I just started watching “Them,” the TV show, the second season. It’s great. It’s really scary.

Q: How were you able to communicate the vision for this film?
IS: For me, the high concept of the book, this idea that these characters are trapped in a space where they’re being observed was strong to me. So it was like every decision we made in the movie in terms of visuals and set design and sound, was all contributing to this central high concept and that feeling of fear.
Q: How were you able to maintain the level of fear and suspense throughout the film?
IS: The most scary version of horror is this slow horror, where it’s really about milking the moments where you, as a human being, are questioning what’s happening and questioning if what you’ve been told is real. The script-writing process, and then in terms of how I was conversing with the actors, was very much suited to that conversation of when they’re feeling what and how they’re moving through that not knowing.
“The Watchers” will be theatrically released on June 7.
