*Netflix is kicking off the endgame for “Stranger Things” by releasing the first five minutes of its fifth and final season. The preview dropped alongside the Los Angeles premiere and opens the door to the series’ final showdown in Hawkins. The roll-out for the complete season will unfold in three parts: four episodes on November 26, three more on December 25, and the finale arriving on New Year’s Eve at 5:00 p.m. PST. Global release times vary.
Those opening minutes return viewers to a young Will Byers in “The Crawl,” trapped in the Upside Down forest where his journey began. Per Netflix’s Tudum: “Will is alone and terrified, huddled inside a makeshift fort when an eerie cracking sound causes him to bolt upright. A menacing Demogorgon is just outside and ready to attack, forcing Will to run through the forest and up a tree. The Demogorgon catches up and drags him into Vecna’s decrepit lair, made even creepier as red lightning flashes overhead.”

Season 5 takes place in the fall of 1987, with Hawkins still reeling from the opening of the Rifts. According to the official synopsis, “Our heroes are united by a single goal: find and kill Vecna. But he has vanished — his whereabouts and plans unknown.” The government’s pursuit of Eleven and a military quarantine intensify the pressure, while the anniversary of Will’s disappearance brings an ominous energy back to town.
Series creators Matt and Ross Duffer say this final season finally reveals major secrets rooted in a 25-page mythology document from Season 1. “We’ve saved a few big reveals for this season,” Ross said. Matt added that “Nothing in Hawkins is normal anymore,” setting the tone for a finale steeped in escalation. Executive producer Shawn Levy noted that even with the heightened scale, “It’s always anchored in these characters we love.”
Ross previously told Tudum, “We usually set up their normal life and how they’re going about school, and then we introduce the supernatural element. But in this case, this season is sprinting from the start.”

Millie Bobby Brown described Eleven’s arc this season in clear terms: “Eleven is in training mode. She’s in a warrior state… all she is thinking about is protecting her friends.”
The Duffers also expressed excitement about the finale’s theatrical release, saying they are “beyond excited that fans will have the chance to experience the final episode of ‘Stranger Things’ in theaters,” calling it “something we’ve dreamed about for years.”
