*The NBA frequently experiments with rule changes but has largely kept the overall game structure intact. However, Commissioner Adam Silver suggested on The Dan Patrick Show that he is open to shortening games by reducing quarters from 12 to 10 minutes.
As Uproxx reports, he pointed out that the NBA is the only league worldwide using 12-minute quarters and believes a shorter format could enhance the game’s appeal to television audiences.
“Something else I’m a fan of — and I’m probably in the minority — as we get more involved in global basketball, the NBA is the only league that plays 48 minutes,” Silver said.
“I am a fan of four 10-minute quarters. I’m not sure that many others are, and putting aside what it means for records and things like that, I think that a two-hour format for a game is more consistent with modern television habits,” Silver added in the clip above.
Silver admitted that reducing quarter lengths would be a significant change and questioned whether it would gain widespread support across the league. He also emphasized that the idea is primarily driven by television considerations rather than concerns from fans attending games in person.
