*Rapper Mystikal has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to rape charges stemming from a 2022 assault at his Louisiana home, bringing another dramatic chapter to a legal saga that has followed the artist for more than two decades.
The rapper, born Michael Lawrence Tyler, appeared in court this week as a judge handed down the sentence following his March 2026 guilty plea to third-degree rape.
According to reports, the victim addressed the court before sentencing and asked for the maximum punishment. She described a violent encounter in which Mystikal allegedly choked her, pulled braids from her hair and forcibly raped her.
After hearing her statement, Mystikal reportedly told the courtroom, “If I did that to you, I deserve the max sentence.”
The sentencing follows his 2022 arrest on charges that initially included first-degree rape and false imprisonment. Authorities alleged that the victim was assaulted at the rapper’s home in Ascension Parish, Louisiana.
Details Of The Case
According to court reports, the woman told investigators that Mystikal beat, choked and robbed her before sexually assaulting her. She also alleged that he took her phone and keys and prevented her from leaving.
The victim claimed she was forced to search for money Mystikal believed had been taken from him before he allegedly raped her. Reports stated that she was later allowed to leave after being compelled to send money through CashApp.
Had Mystikal been convicted on the original first-degree rape charge, he could have faced a life sentence.
Before sentencing, the rapper attempted to withdraw his guilty plea. Court filings reportedly argued that he had not been given sufficient time to fully consider the consequences of the plea agreement and had been under significant emotional distress when he made the decision.
The effort was unsuccessful.
Unlike a previous rape case that was ultimately dropped without an indictment, the current case ended with a guilty plea, resulting in a conviction and a 20-year prison sentence.

A Career Marked by Success and Setbacks
Mystikal emerged as one of the defining voices of Southern hip-hop during the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Born in New Orleans, he first gained attention with his independent debut before joining Master P’s No Limit Records, one of the most influential rap labels of its era.
His profile grew through platinum-selling albums including “Unpredictable” and “Ghetto Fabulous,” but his biggest commercial breakthrough arrived with “Let’s Get Ready” in 2000. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and eventually went double platinum.
The project produced some of Mystikal’s most recognizable hits, including “Shake Ya Ass” and “Danger (Been So Long),” helping establish him as one of the most distinctive performers in hip-hop with his raspy voice and high-energy delivery.
He also found success through collaborations, appearing on major records including Ludacris’ “Move Bitch” and Joe’s chart-topping hit “Stutter.”
A Long History of Legal Trouble
Mystikal’s legal troubles have repeatedly overshadowed his music career.
In 2002, he was arrested after a hairstylist accused him and two bodyguards of forcing her to perform oral sex after accusing her of stealing checks. He later pleaded guilty to sexual battery and extortion.
In 2004, he was sentenced to six years in prison and ultimately served the full term before being released in 2010. The conviction required him to register as a sex offender for life.
His legal problems continued in 2012 when he served three months in jail following a misdemeanor domestic abuse case.
In 2017, Mystikal was again arrested on charges including first-degree rape and kidnapping. He spent approximately 18 months behind bars before those charges were eventually dropped after a grand jury declined to indict him.
The 2022 arrest that led to his latest conviction returned the rapper to the center of another high-profile criminal case.

What Comes Next
At 55 years old, Mystikal now faces another lengthy prison term that places the future of his recording career in serious doubt.
The sentence marks another dramatic turn in the career of an artist whose music helped define Southern hip-hop’s rise to national prominence and made him one of the most recognizable voices of the No Limit era.
For advocates of sexual assault victims, however, the focus remains on accountability and the woman whose allegations ultimately led to a guilty plea, conviction and 20-year sentence.
