*An 18-year-old Minnesota resident has accused a Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant of discrimination, claiming a server confronted her in a restroom and insisted she verify her gender.
As NBC News reports, the incident occurred in April when Gerika Mudra, who is biracial, visited the Owatonna location with a friend. According to Gender Justice, the gender-equality group representing her, a server followed Mudra into the women’s restroom, knocked on her stall, and said: “This is a women’s restroom. The man needs to get out of here.”
Mudra, who is not transgender, alleges the server continued to press the issue even after she said, “I am a lady.” The server reportedly replied, “You have to get out now.”
Feeling pressured to prove herself, Mudra said she unzipped her hoodie to reveal her chest. The server left without responding, but the encounter left Mudra unsettled. “She made me feel very uncomfortable,” she said. “After that, I just don’t like going in public bathrooms. I just hold it in. … I want to be able to use the bathroom in peace.”
Gender Justice has filed a complaint with the Minnesota Department of Human Rights, alleging the incident violated the state’s Human Rights Act, which protects against discrimination based on gender identity, sexual orientation, and other factors.

Sara Jane Baldwin, senior staff attorney at Gender Justice, said Minnesota law guards against discrimination. “Businesses have a legal obligation not to just have antidiscrimination policies on paper, but to train staff and ensure that those policies are followed in real time,” she stated.
Gender Justice described the case as part of a wider pattern of suspicion toward people who do not conform to conventional gender norms.
Megan Peterson, executive director of Gender Justice, called the incident “nothing new,” warning of the potentially more dangerous consequences if Mudra had been transgender.
