Mel Gibson Calls for Overthrow of Newsom and Bass on Fox Podcast
*Some absolutely crazy ish is coming from the mouth of actor and director Mel Gibson, who stirred major controversy this week, after calling on Californians to “overthrow” Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass.
The remarks were made during an appearance on Raymond Arroyo’s podcast Arroyo Grande, and later broadcast on Fox News.
Gibson claimed both leaders had failed during the January 2025 wildfires and recent anti-ICE protests. “California is in a state of turmoil,” Gibson said. “How much more of their destructive decision-making masquerading as leadership are we going to tolerate?”
He called on Angelenos to “take back our community and our state,” urging voters to replace Newsom and Bass with “competent leaders whose goals are to protect us.”

Mel Gibson Blames Officials for Wildfire Damage and Protest Chaos
The outspoken actor lost his Pacific Palisades home in the Palisades Fire earlier this year and has since been an active critic of California’s leadership. He joined the “Saving California” recall movement in February, targeting Newsom’s emergency preparedness and disaster response.
Gibson also criticized the handling of ongoing anti-ICE protests, which erupted after mass immigration raids on June 6. He and Arroyo accused Newsom and Bass of letting the situation spiral into chaos, with blocked freeways and delayed emergency response times across Los Angeles.
While Gibson did not explicitly call for violence, his use of the term “overthrow” has drawn concern amid already heightened tensions in the state.
Podcast Appearance Triggers Mixed Reactions Across the Country
Gibson’s remarks instantly went viral. Conservative media figures and Trump supporters praised the message, citing growing dissatisfaction with California’s political leadership. Liberal activists and many public officials, however, saw the comments as reckless and inflammatory.
Both Newsom and Bass have defended their handling of the crises, condemning violence while upholding the right to protest. Bass imposed citywide curfews in mid-June, while Newsom challenged Trump’s controversial deployment of thousands of federal troops to L.A., which remains under court review.

Commentator Earl Ofari Hutchinson Responds with Blistering Statement
Longtime political analyst and author Earl Ofari Hutchinson offered one of the strongest responses to Gibson’s statement:
“Mel Gibson—a washed up has been MAGA wanna be anti Semite actor/director calling for Bass and Newsom to be overthrown is beyond laughable especially since he was long overthrown by the film going public. This is just another case of a suck up Trumpite trying to grab a momentary headline. Mercifully his baseless pitiable rant will quickly go the way of his dubious career namely forgotten.”
Hutchinson’s critique has been widely shared online, with many praising his candor and calling for accountability when celebrities stoke political division.
Gibson’s Trump Ties and Hollywood Role Raise Eyebrows
In January 2025, President Trump named Gibson a “special ambassador to Hollywood,” alongside conservative actors Jon Voight and Sylvester Stallone. The move was meant to solidify entertainment industry support ahead of the 2026 elections.
Gibson’s return to politics follows years of controversy, including his 2006 antisemitic remarks that nearly ended his career. Though he’s directed and acted in recent films, his public image remains divisive.
Critics argue he’s using his platform to reignite relevance by aligning with far-right agendas—an approach that, they say, further divides California voters.

Why This Gibson Outburst Could Impact California Politics
Gibson’s call comes at a pivotal time. Newsom is nearing his term limit, and Bass is expected to seek re-election.
Both are under scrutiny for their crisis management and relations with the federal government.
Some worry that high-profile voices like Gibson’s could embolden political extremism, while others see it as free speech amid a tense national climate.
Regardless of intent, Gibson’s remarks have added fuel to California’s already blazing political fire—and the fallout may linger well past the summer.
