*Mary J. Blige has prevailed in court after a New York judge dismissed a lawsuit brought against her by stylist Misa Hylton. The ruling ends a brief but contentious legal dispute that accused the singer of interfering with a business relationship involving rapper Vado.
According to Rolling Stone, the decision was entered Tuesday after Hylton failed to respond to a motion to dismiss filed by Blige’s legal team. Judge Phaedra F. Perry-Bond ruled that the lack of response amounted to an abandonment of the claims, bringing the case to a close without sanctions but not without criticism.
In a sharply worded decision, the judge expressed clear displeasure with how the case was handled. “The court in no way condones parties filing lawsuits claiming millions in damages based on inflammatory accusations, only to have those very same parties abandon their allegations when faced with a motion to dismiss and sanctions,” Perry-Bond wrote.
She further cautioned, “Plaintiffs and their counsel shall consider this a warning to refrain from engaging in similar patterns of behavior in the future. This written warning may serve as weighty evidence on a future application for sanctions if plaintiffs and/or their counsel continue to engage in similar bad faith litigation tactics.”

Hylton, who began working with Blige in the early 1990s, played a key role in shaping the singer’s early image during the rollout of Blige’s 1992 album “What’s the 411?” Their professional collaboration later developed into a friendship that unraveled when the lawsuit was filed in April 2025.
The complaint, brought by Hylton, her company M.I.S.A. Management, and Vado, alleged that Blige interfered with Hylton’s management relationship with the rapper. Vado signed a recording deal with Blige’s Beautiful Life Productions in October 2023, a move the lawsuit claimed led to pressure for him to cut ties with M.I.S.A. Management.
Blige’s attorneys argued the $5 million lawsuit had no legal foundation, calling it “utterly meritless” and motivated by publicity. Shortly after the suit drew public attention, Blige shared a message that many interpreted as reflective of the situation. “If people don’t reciprocate your love, time, and energy they are not good investments. Get rid of them asap and take care of you,” she wrote. “Love You!”
