*Mark Wahlberg is teaming up with Pras Michél, founding member of the Fugees, to create a documentary chronicling the artist’s extraordinary legal saga. The project promises an unflinching look at Michél’s journey through a high-profile case that intersects hip-hop culture, global politics, and the U.S. justice system, per the press release.
“Everyone is fascinated by all the twists and turns, like it’s some kind of thriller,” Michél said from Los Angeles, where he remains restricted from leaving the country, per Variety. “But for me, this is just my life — the real, messy, complicated truth of what I’ve been living through.”
Michél was convicted in 2022 on ten federal counts, including money laundering, campaign finance violations, and conspiracy. Department of Justice special agent Harry Lidsky said, “Michél played a central role in a wide-ranging conspiracy to improperly influence top government officials, including the then-president [Trump] and the then-attorney general [Sessions].” FBI assistant director Luis Quesada added that Michél “brazenly conspired to help a foreign national launder millions of dollars in illegitimate campaign contributions into the 2012 U.S. presidential election.”

The U.S. government seized nearly $80 million from Michél, labeling him a Chinese spy—a claim upheld by a jury. Prosecutors also alleged he earned over $100 million through his role in the financial scandal. Reflecting on his legal ordeal in a 2024 interview with Variety, Michél said, “I don’t know if subconsciously it was a bit exciting for me too. I like spy movies, but I never wanted to be a spy. I don’t think that’s sexy. But a part of it felt like that.”
Michél’s sentencing, originally set for October 3, has been postponed for the third time as President Donald Trump considers a potential pardon. The Fugees founder faces up to 22 years in federal prison, following his conviction linked to the $4.5 billion Malaysian 1MDB sovereign wealth fund scandal.
The documentary, produced under Wahlberg’s Unrealistic Ideas banner, will explore both Michél’s musical legacy and the personal toll of navigating high-stakes legal battles. Wahlberg called Michél a “legend” and said, “I’m rooting for Pras and excited to tell his story.”

Malaysian financier Jho Low is at the center of the 1MDB scandal. He famously bankrolled the 2013 film “The Wolf of Wall Street” and moved in Hollywood circles that included Wahlberg and Leonardo DiCaprio. During Michél’s federal trial, DiCaprio appeared as a witness for the prosecution, testifying about his interactions with Low. While several figures were drawn into the investigation, Michél remains the only one awaiting sentencing, as Low remains at large.
Unrealistic Ideas president Archie Gips described Michél’s story as “just the kind of complex, shocking and emotional story” that his company seeks to bring to audiences. “It’s a surprising mix of pop culture and geopolitical intrigue that feels like a spy thriller come to life,” he added.
