*Louisiana lawmakers are calling for family-friendly Super Bowl halftime performances ahead of the upcoming big game in New Orleans, criticizing past shows as “lewd” and “offensive.”
In a letter sent to local event organizers, 17 Republican legislators highlighted issues with Jennifer Lopez’s 2020 performance and Rihanna’s 2023 show, calling them inappropriate for children. They specifically mentioned Lopez’s suggestive gestures and provocative attire, as well as Rihanna’s performance while pregnant, which they deemed offensive. In the letter, the signatories slammed the singer for “groping herself while she sang song lyrics that were so offensive that few Louisiana adults could read those lyrics before an audience without shame.” The lawmakers also referenced the infamous Janet Jackson “wardrobe malfunction” from 2004.
The letter, published on NOLA.com, argued that since Louisiana taxpayers are contributing to the Super Bowl, they should have input on the halftime show. Controversy currently surrounds the upcoming performance, with some fans upset that rapper Kendrick Lamar, not local artist Lil Wayne, is headlining.
The Republicans also noted that there “are also hardworking taxpayers with children who have serious concerns about the fact that past Super Bowl halftime performances have been less than family-friendly.”
“We realize that these past vulgar performances may have been acceptable to the [residents] of those states where those Super Bowls were held but, in Louisiana, these lewd acts are inappropriate for viewing by children, objectify women, and are simply NOT welcome by the majority of Louisiana parents,” the letter added.

The letter was also supported by 15 representatives from organizations advocating for traditional family values.
The Eagles and Chiefs will face off in Super Bowl 2025, a rematch of their 2023 showdown. The game, one of the biggest sporting events of the year, is set for Sunday, February 9, with kickoff at 6:30 p.m. ET.
Entertainment for Super Bowl 59 includes a halftime performance by Kendrick Lamar. Jon Batiste will perform the National Anthem, Lauren Daigle and Trombone Shorty will sing America the Beautiful, and Ledisi will perform Lift Every Voice and Sing.
