*Lionel Richie fans gathered in Times Square on Sept. 29, eager for what they believed would be an intimate concert by the legendary singer. Instead, the event, titled “Truly: An Evening of Lionel Richie and Friends,” was a discussion about his newly released memoir, “Truly,” leaving many attendees feeling deceived.
According to Hello Magazine, some paid $600 for tickets, expecting to hear his hits, only to find Richie joined by “Good Morning America” host Robin Roberts for a conversation, not a performance. The confusion stemmed from Ticketmaster’s promotion, which listed the event under “concert tickets” and “pop.”
Despite the venue’s website describing it as a “conversation with friends,” fans felt misled. One attendee expressed frustration on Richie’s Instagram, stating, “Horribly disappointed with this event. Ticketmaster totally misled all of us and made us think it was a ‘concert’. So disappointed. We all should get our money back. People walked out so disgusted.”

Another commented, “Ticketmaster ripped us off as they sold tickets with all thinking this was a concert in NYC and it’s not. Terrible marketing.”
As Roberts took the stage, the crowd’s disappointment boiled over, with one fan shouting, “Shut up and sing!” before exiting, according to Page Six. Richie addressed the unrest, saying, “If you’re looking for a concert, you came to the wrong place.”
Richie’s new memoir explores his music career and personal struggles. The event’s description promised an intimate look at these stories, noting, “Lionel Richie invites you to join him as he shares his intimate, deep, and candid moments.”
He told PEOPLE, “To be honest, I don’t know how I remembered a lot of stuff. And then there were moments when I wanted to forget things – and that’s the painful part.”
