*Laverne Cox says her upcoming comedy series “Clean Slate” is “very much a tribute to the legacy of Norman Lear.”
Lear produced and developed over 100 shows and 1970s sitcoms, including “All in the Family” (1971–1979), “Maude” (1972–1978), “Sanford and Son” (1972–1977), “The Jeffersons” (1975–1985), and “Good Times” (1974–1979). His shows incorporated political and social themes into the sitcom format.
According to Cox, “Clean Slate” also tackles “intense issues, but doing it in a fun way, in a way that’s accessible and in a way that doesn’t point a finger at you or preach to you,” Cox explained in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, referencing “the iconic television created in the ‘70s and ‘80s that were family comedies that had political messages, but it didn’t hit you over the head with it.”
“Clean Slate” is a heartfelt comedy that “follows Harry (George Wallace), an old-school car wash owner in Alabama who has a lot of soul searching to do when the child he thought was a son returns after 17 years as a proud trans woman, Desiree (Cox). Her homecoming brings together a hilarious cast of friends, coworkers, and love interests as Desiree and Harry try to get it right the second time around. The series explores universal themes of unconditional love, all through Norman Lear’s signature boundary-pushing brand of comedy,” per the synopsis.
“After being away for 23 years and, she says in the pilot, being in really dysfunctional relationships with men, she realizes that she has to go back to the source of the first unavailable man in her life, and that’s her father,” Cox said.

“Ultimately, this show is about love, this show is about family, and trying to figure out how to connect after being away from each other and figuring out how to connect across generations and experiences,” Cox explained.
“Desiree has gone and lived. She’s grown up in New York and become a very different person beyond her gender identity, but just culturally. And so it’s really about that and this father who loves his daughter unconditionally and all the other families that sort of exist in the show, Louis and his mom, and Opal and Mac. So it’s a show about family.”
Created by Dan Ewen, the series will debut all episodes on Prime Video on February 6th.
