*Centennial High School in Compton became the focus of a major redevelopment push this week as a $270 million campus overhaul was officially highlighted during a public event involving some of the school’s most prominent alumni.
The project marks the first large-scale construction effort at the campus in 70 years and is expected to deliver a modern facility designed to serve roughly 1,800 students when it opens in 2029, XXL reports.
Among those connected to the initiative were Kendrick Lamar, Dr. Dre, and will.i.am, all of whom have ties to the Compton school community and its broader cultural legacy. The event also highlighted the school’s long list of influential alumni, including DJ Quik, along with other figures tied to the West Coast hip-hop scene.

Dr. Dre spoke at the gathering, framing the redevelopment as a long-term investment in the city’s future. He described the moment as a “full-circle” experience, reflecting on his personal connection to the campus and its role in shaping his early years.
He emphasized a shift in mindset around philanthropy, stating, “On this day, I’m making a commitment and that commitment is to let go of the notion of giving back. Instead, I’m embracing the power of investing forward.”
Dre added, “And today isn’t just about a new building, it’s about the promise I kept to the city that made me, point, blank, period. And this groundbreaking is where the vision we shared for years finally hits the pavement.”
Kendrick Lamar did not take the stage during the ceremony, but his presence was tied to the broader significance of the project and its connection to his roots in Compton’s school system.
