*The new documentary “In Whose Name?” offers an unfiltered look at Kanye West’s life, capturing his bold persona over six years of filming.
A striking moment features a 2018 strategy session with the late Charlie Kirk and conservative commentator Candace Owens. “I have to show an example of a non-perfect Black celeb that still wins,” West tells the duo, per Us Magazine. “Because if you’re a celebrity and you’re Black and you’re perfect, you’re the housekeeper.” Owens, 36, responds, calling such a scenario a “glorified slave,” while Kirk adds that West would be “the help.”
The film highlights West’s controversial 2018 White House visit, where he donned a red “Make America Great Again” hat. “They tried to scare me to not wear this hat,” West told President Donald Trump at the time. “This hat, it gives me power in a way. You made a Superman cape for me.” Owens, reflecting on the moment, tells West, “Culture will always be upstream from politics. Whoever can control culture can control politics. … You wearing a MAGA hat? It broke the internet.”
West’s mental health journey is a central theme, with the rapper discussing his decision to stop bipolar medication, later claiming a misdiagnosis of autism. “I’m off my meds for five months now,” he declares, adding, “I would rather be dead than be on medication.”
He credits his wife, Bianca Censori, for recognizing, “Something about your personality doesn’t feel like it’s bipolar, I’ve seen bipolar before,” as shared on the “Download” podcast. The documentary also captures emotional scenes from West’s 2019 Sunday Service events, where he is seen crying, and his 2020 presidential campaign.
The film includes a poignant cameo from Charlie Kirk, who was killed on September 10 at Utah Valley University. Authorities arrested Tyler Robinson, who faces charges including aggravated murder, with prosecutors seeking the death penalty.
Released on September 19 in roughly 1,000 theaters via AMSI Entertainment, AMC, Regal, and Cinemark, the trailer for “In Whose Name?” closes with West reflecting, “You know the best thing about being an artist and bipolar? Anything you do and say is an art piece.”
