*The Washington Commanders have officially announced rookie Jayden Daniels as their starting quarterback for the 2024 NFL season, ushering in a new era of hope and stability for the franchise.
Daniels, the 2023 Heisman Trophy winner, was selected second overall in the 2024 NFL Draft and now takes on the critical role of leading the Commanders as their eighth Week 1 starting quarterback in as many years.
“He’s ready and earned the right [to be the starter]. He’s really put in the work while being surrounded by some excellent teammates here,” says head coach Dan Quinn expressing his confidence in Daniels.
Despite the presence of veteran quarterback Marcus Mariota on the roster, it became increasingly evident throughout the offseason that Daniels would be declared QB1. The young quarterback joins No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams, who was named the Chicago Bears’ starter less than a month after the draft, as the second rookie QB to get the starting nod for the 2024 season, reports CNN.

Daniels is set to make his regular-season debut on September 8 when the Commanders travel to Florida to take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
“It’s just a blessing that [Coach Quinn] and [general manager Adam Peters] trust me to go out there and lead the team, lead the franchise to hopefully win some games. So big-ups to them, it’s a blessing, something I dreamed about as a kid, to be at this moment, to experience this moment,” Daniels said of his opportunity.
Daniels had an impressive college career, playing his first three seasons at Arizona State before transferring to Louisiana State University (LSU). His standout 2023 campaign earned him the prestigious Heisman Trophy, awarded annually to the most outstanding college player.
Known for his dual-threat capabilities, Daniels is the only player in NCAA Division 1 Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) history to pass for 12,000 yards and rush for 3,000 yards. However, his playing style has raised some concerns about his durability, especially after a significant hit in a game against Alabama last November placed him in concussion protocol.
Despite these concerns, Daniels showed promise during preseason action, completing 12-of-15 passes for 123 yards and rushing for an additional 13 yards over two games.

In other NFL news, Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa recently shared candid thoughts about his former head coach Brian Flores during an interview on “The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz.” Tagovailoa, who has flourished under the leadership of current head coach Mike McDaniel, labeled Flores a “terrible person” and discussed the negative impact of Flores’ coaching style on his confidence.
Tagovailoa compared the approaches of his former and current coaches, emphasizing the importance of positive reinforcement: “If you woke up every morning, and I told you that you suck at what you did… you’re going to start to believe that about yourself,” Tagovailoa said, according to CNN.
Despite early struggles under Flores, Tagovailoa has shown significant progression, leading to his first Pro Bowl selection and a four-year contract extension reportedly worth $212.4 million.
Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell, who now works with Flores as the team’s defensive coordinator, defended him, stating: “I can just tell you I know the players Flo works with, he’s got great relationships here… and that’s all I can really comment on.”
As Tagovailoa’s remarks continue to spark discussion, the debate over coaching styles and their impact on player performance remains a hot topic within the NFL community.
