*EURweb caught up with Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett backstage Sunday before her Revolt World “A Parking Lot Pimpin'” panel in Atlanta and since it’s election season, we asked the U.S. representative her thoughts on mixing creators and campaigns.
EUR: Is it an artist’s responsibility to rally communities to get out and vote?
Jasmine Crockett: We have a rich tradition when it comes to Black folk…using their influence to effectuate real change. It was the Muhammad Alis of the world. It was the Jesse Owens of the world. It was people who ended up with a platform, and they recognized that they were only able to enjoy that platform because they were so much closer to people who had made sacrifices to make sure they could have those platforms. There is this disconnect, and it’s something I’m consistently trying to remain connected to…I have Shirley all around my office. I have Barbara Jordan all around my office because I really want to be humbled by the fact that I know that I stand on their shoulders. I feel a sense of obligation.
Now, as an artist, we know Marvin Gay…The music of the civil rights movement came from Black artists. There’s a role we can all play. They should want to play that role. I will never tell anybody what they absolutely have to do or what their responsibility is, but I would hope they feel a sense of responsibility knowing that there are still challenges we face, especially as Black artists, as they are fighting through the challenges as it relates to artificial intelligence and how that potentially will affect their livelihood, specifically when it comes to politics. I tell people all the time, you may not do politics, but politics will do you. That is a saying that my Soror gave me. If we can start to better connect how politics affects all of us – whether you’re an artist or not – I think that they will be more inclined.
