*Isiah Thomas’ remarkable NBA career earned him two championships, 12 All-Star appearances, and a place in the Hall of Fame. Yet for Thomas, the most meaningful part of his success isn’t reflected in statistics or accolades; it’s the difference he made for his family.
Growing up in Chicago’s South Side, Thomas witnessed firsthand the dangers of poverty, drugs, and gang violence. He credits his NBA career not only for personal achievement but for providing a lifeline to his loved ones. Over 13 seasons, Thomas reportedly earned $16.7 million, all of which he used to improve the lives of his nieces, nephews, children, and cousins, Basketball Network reports.
“I spent all my NBA money cleaning up my family, laying the foundation so they’ll have a chance to get out of poverty,” Thomas told Forbes.

Thomas ensured that basic needs were met, that family members had housing and food, and that many could pursue higher education. Today, most of them have either graduated from college or completed several years of study.
“I still have some that don’t eat or are living in hard times, but for the most part, the thing that I’m most proud of is that most of my nieces, nephews, when they go to the refrigerator, there’s some food in the refrigerator,” he added. “When they leave their job, they have a house to go to, an apartment to stay in, and most of them have either graduated from college, or had two-three years of college.”
Beyond financial support, Thomas invested in his family’s future by offering six-month internships at his companies, helping them gain professional experience and learn to support themselves.
Thomas emphasizes that this, more than championships or awards, is the true measure of his success. “To me, that’s the success story,” he said. “Not what I’ve done, but what my family is able to do now. If I don’t make it to the NBA, honestly, I don’t know what happens to us.”
For Thomas, the NBA wasn’t just a career; it was a chance to protect his family, break the cycle of hardship, and create opportunities that would last for generations.
