*Roughly 1.1 million Americans still have a chance to claim a stimulus payment of up to $1,400 from the federal government, but the window to act is closing.
The IRS has urged anyone who didn’t receive the third stimulus check, issued during the pandemic under the American Rescue Plan of 2021, to file their 2021 tax return by April 15, 2025. This final opportunity is tied to the Recovery Rebate Credit, which provides funds to eligible individuals who were missed in the last round of payments.
Per The Independent, eligibility is income-dependent. Individuals earning up to $75,000 and married couples with joint incomes up to $150,000 can receive the full benefit—$1,400 for individuals and $2,800 for couples. Those with incomes slightly above the threshold may still receive partial payments, though it phases out completely at $80,000 for individuals and $160,000 for couples. Dependents also qualify for the full amount regardless of age. The agency will automatically distribute payments through paper checks, utilizing the banking details provided in 2023 tax returns.
The IRS emphasized that this is a hard deadline. There will be no extensions or second chances for those who miss the April 15 cutoff. Failure to file in time could mean permanently forfeiting the money, which would then revert to the U.S. Treasury. Taxpayers usually have three years to claim refunds, and the IRS has already distributed $2.4 billion earlier this year to people who filed late and qualified.
The agency warns that those waiting until the last minute may experience delays, potentially putting their eligibility at risk. For non-filers from 2021, the median unclaimed refund is about $781, not including the potential $1,400 stimulus payment. To avoid missing out, eligible individuals must submit their 2021 return as soon as possible.
