Ian Roberts Faces Federal Charges After Arrest in Des Moines
*Oop. Things just went from bad to worse for Ian Roberts (also known as Andre Ian Roberts), the former superintendent of Des Moines Public Schools. That’s because he is now facing serious federal charges. Yesterday (10-02-25), federal prosecutors charged him with being an undocumented immigrant in possession of firearms.
Roberts, 54, entered the U.S. from Guyana in 1999 on a student visa. But he stayed illegally and was ordered deported in May 2024.
Despite that, he was hired in 2023 to lead Iowa’s largest school district, serving over 30,000 students.
ICE Arrest and Weapon Discovery Shock the Community
The situation escalated on September 26, when ICE agents tried to detain Roberts in Des Moines.
He fled the scene in a school district vehicle, later abandoned in a wooded area.
Inside the vehicle, agents found a loaded handgun, $3,000 in cash, and a hunting knife. He was arrested shortly after with help from the Iowa State Patrol.
Roberts Had Prior Weapons Charges on Record
The arrest also revealed a previous weapons possession charge from 2020. This raised questions about how he passed background checks for the superintendent role.
Following his arrest, Roberts was first held in Pottawattamie County Jail before being transferred to Sioux City. He is now in custody at Woodbury County Jail.
License Revoked, Resignation Follows Public Outcry
On September 29, the Iowa Department of Education revoked Roberts’ administrator license. The next day, he resigned from DMPS through his attorney, calling it a “painful but necessary” move.
School board members expressed shock, questioning how he was hired despite the deportation order. An internal investigation is underway to uncover any hiring oversights.
Federal Firearm Charges Could Mean 10 Years in Prison
The U.S. District Court of Southern Iowa filed an indictment accusing Roberts of possessing firearms as an undocumented immigrant—a federal felony.
Prosecutors say Roberts had a gun in his vehicle during his ICE arrest. Later, the ATF searched his home and found three more firearms, including rifles and a shotgun.

Supporters Defend Ian Roberts Amid Legal Battle
Roberts’ attorney is pushing to reopen his immigration case. They hope to stop deportation by citing community impact and humanitarian grounds.
Many in the community have shown support. Hundreds rallied on September 30, saying the ICE arrest disrupted the school system and was too aggressive.
Town Hall Draws Hundreds Seeking Answers
State Rep. Rob Johnson hosted a packed town hall on October 2 at Corinthian Baptist Church. Over 200 people attended to discuss what comes next for DMPS and the community.
The district is now searching for an interim leader while reassuring parents that students’ education won’t be disrupted.
What the Ian Roberts Case Means for Schools and Immigration
This case could lead to more federal audits on educator background checks. It also highlights tensions between immigration enforcement and education leadership.
As Roberts remains in custody with his court date pending, the debate continues. Supporters want compassion, while critics push for accountability and reform.
