*Hair salon customers in Houston are finding themselves taking an extra step in getting their hair ready for their stylists to do their part. Taking to social media, Nerissa Kimble spilled the tea on her hairstylist, revealing the stylist required her to wash her hair prior to showing up for her appointment.
The requirement did not go over well with Kimble, a fitness company owner, as she aired her problem with it to the masses.
“You don’t wash Black people’s natural hair back to back in less than 24 hours,” she said in a now-viral TikTok video while pointing out the difference between natural hair is different from Caucasian hair. “I’m so mad. I don’t like to be walking around with my hair looking like this.”
Although Kimble’s issues with her hairstylist is new to her and other folks, Sandra Rose notes the practice is not new, as it cites Caucasian hair salons with its start. For those establishments, clients wash their hair before arriving for color and haircut appointments.
In Kimble’s case, she sometimes wears faux locs for weeks and has to deal with matted and dirty hair after removing them. She went on to say that he combed “all of the build-up” from her natural hair before her silk press appointment, noting the $95 cost of the silk press.
@bigbawsehognkI’m pissed!!! Like what type of rule is this? Why would I pay yall $100+ if I had to do my own hair as well! Can’t tag em bc their page private! But do not support them! @roundbrushsalon♬ original sound – BigBawseHogNK
During a phone conversation with her stylist, Kimble said the stylist told her that when clients remove faux locs, their hair must be rinsed, detangled, then washed again.
“Okay, so I’m thinking that’s their procedure,” said Kimble, who misunderstood the stylist’s instructions. “That’s weird, I ain’t never seen it, ain’t ever heard of that, I ain’t ever seen it, but I guess they’ve got to wash it, detangle it, wash it again, if that’s their procedure.”
Although she was “excited” about her visit, Kimble’s arrival with her natural hair in two buns caused a ruckus.
It was then that the stylist informed Kimble that detangling her hair would require “too many hours” and claimed that every salon expects customers to wash and detangle their hair before their visit.

That was news to Kimble, who voiced her thoughts to the stylist on what she just found out.
“I said, ‘No they don’t,’” Kimble recalled. “I’ve been going to a beauty salon since I was 8 years old. I can see if I asked you to take the braids down, that’s different, or if I came in here with braids [were] still in, that’s different.”
As she continued, Kimble mentioned another staff member being uncomfortable while she was escorted to a sink to wash her hair. Kimble said she was asked to leave the salon without having her hair done, adding that since it was a Saturday evening, there were no hair salons with available appointments.
Chatting with People about her ordeal, Kimble stated she was able to schedule an appointment with another hairdresser in Houston via suggestions from her TikTok followers.
The drama Kimble experienced came amid a change at hair salons. Recent surveys show a majority of hairstylists prefer working with hair that has been washed 24-48 hours prior to the appointment.
