*HBO Documentary Films has unveiled the official trailer for “Fukushima: A Nuclear Nightmare,” a feature-length documentary examining the aftermath of Japan’s 2011 nuclear disaster. The film is directed and executive produced by James Jones, with Megumi Inman serving as co-director and producer.
The documentary revisits March 2011, when a 9.0-magnitude earthquake—the most powerful ever recorded in Japan—triggered a tsunami that devastated the country’s northeast coastline, the synopsis states. Nearly 20,000 people lost their lives, and entire communities were wiped out. At the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, the massive wave knocked out cooling systems for three reactors, leading to rising radiation levels and hydrogen explosions.
As the crisis escalated, officials confronted the possibility of evacuating Tokyo, home to approximately 35 million residents. The film reconstructs the nine days that followed in detailed, real-time fashion, tracing events from inside the plant’s control rooms to the highest levels of government.

Central to the story are the workers tasked with preventing a total meltdown. Under orders from then–Prime Minister Naoto Kan, employees entered compromised reactor buildings despite the grave risks. These men, later known as the Fukushima 50, describe the isolation and mounting pressure they faced as they worked in darkened facilities amid fears the mission could cost them their lives.
The documentary also features interviews with plant engineers, TEPCO officials, government advisers, emergency responders, American consultants, and journalists who covered the unfolding crisis. For the first time, control-room supervisor Ikuo Izawa and others who were present during those pivotal days share detailed public accounts of what transpired.
Produced by Blast Films in association with Dogwoof, “Fukushima: A Nuclear Nightmare” brings together an international team of executive producers from HBO and Dogwoof. The trailer highlights a reconstruction that places viewers inside one of the most consequential nuclear emergencies in modern history.
