*Years after being a standard in tennis and soccer, Sony’s Hawk-Eye technology is coming to the NFL.
According to 107.5 TheFan, the shift from a chain crew to measure first downs will start in the 2025 season. The previous method, which relied on the chain crew, will be related to back up status in favor of the more modern Hawk-Eye approach.
Under Hawk-Eye, six 8K cameras positioned around the field will be used to provide real-time ball tracking and deliver highly precise measurements.
The shift, which comes after years of testing, will mark a noticeable change for the NFL regarding the long-debated issue of the accuracy and efficiency of traditional chain measurements.
Delays in the game will be reduced, opening the door for the Hawk-Eye tech advanced technology to increase reliability with reducing the process down to just 30 seconds.
High-profile controversies where current methods failed to resolve critical calls will be a thing of the past. Although the more streamlined and data driven approach of Hawk-Eye technology will be a plus, the Fan notes it won’t come without its share of challenges
Most notably, the fact that the system still relies on referees’ first ball placements, which remain subjective as well as obstructed views during chaotic plays that may force a renewed reliance on traditional methods.
Yes, Hawk-Eye technology will be a welcome plus. But it does not prevent the question of why it took so long for the pro’s so long to get on board with something that already made a mark in tennis and soccer. With technology becoming a bigger presence in modern sports with the NFL’s pursuit of precision and faster decision-making, some fans may miss the drama of chain measurements f technology in modern sports.
How much of an impact remains to be seen with Hawk-Eye technology. Whether it marks a defining moment or something that could’ve been it will be interesting.
