Godfrey Sees the Video and Immediately Says, “Nah”
*Comedian and activist Godfrey is shining a spotlight on a viral video that left many viewers stunned—and not in a good way. In the clip, a Hispanic man proudly shows off his disguise meant to make him look Black, claiming it will help him avoid ICE.
As if that weren’t bad enough, he announces, “I’m a mayate now, fool,” casually dropping a racial slur while smiling. Godfrey wasted no time calling out the absurdity. Survival tactic or not, this one landed straight in offensive territory.
Using a Slur While Pretending to Be Black Is a Choice
The man could have simply said he was pretending to be Black. Instead, he reached for “mayate,” a derogatory term used by some Mexicans toward Black people. That detail turned a bad idea into a full-blown “sir, what are you doing?” moment.
Godfrey pointed out the irony. You’re borrowing Blackness for protection, but insulting Black people in the same breath. That’s not blending in. That’s disrespect wrapped in bad judgment.

Cosplaying Blackness for Convenience Doesn’t Sit Right
Godfrey framed the stunt as “cultural cosplay,” not solidarity. The man wasn’t embracing Black culture—he was using it as a costume when it felt useful. Once the danger passes, the paint washes off. The stereotypes don’t.
Online critics echoed the point. You don’t get to step into a marginalized identity temporarily, crack jokes, and then step right back out when it suits you. That’s not clever. It’s lazy and offensive.
Godfrey Brings Up the History People Love to Ignore
Godfrey also reminded viewers that the tension between Black and Mexican communities makes little sense historically. Mexico helped enslaved Africans escape. It had a Black president. Afro-Mexicans still exist and still get erased.
Yet moments like this expose lingering anti-Blackness. As Godfrey put it, people love Black culture when it’s useful, entertaining, or protective—but not when it deserves respect.

The Internet Reacts: “This Ain’t It, Chief”
Reactions online ranged from disbelief to outright roasting. Some tried to excuse the man’s actions as desperation. Others weren’t buying it, pointing out that desperation doesn’t require slurs or smug delivery.
One popular comment summed it up best: “You can’t insult Black people while hiding behind Blackness. Pick a struggle.”
This Is Bigger Than One Dumb Video
Godfrey’s commentary turned the clip into a broader conversation about anti-Blackness, hypocrisy, and selective identity. The issue isn’t immigration—it’s disrespect disguised as humor and survival.
So far, the man in the video hasn’t apologized or responded. But thanks to Godfrey, the internet made one thing clear: Blackness is not a costume, a shield, or a punchline.
