*Ex-Officer Brett Hankison Sentenced to 33 Months in Prison
*Well, now this is a bit of a surprise. Former Louisville police officer Brett Hankison has been sentenced to 33 months behind bars. He will also face three years of supervised release. The DOJ had been pushing for a ridiculous and insulting sentence of just ONE day.
The sentencing came on July 21, 2025, after Hankison was found guilty of a civil rights violation related to Breonna Taylor’s death.
Conviction for Excessive Force in Breonna Taylor Raid
Hankison was convicted of using excessive force by firing 10 bullets into Taylor’s apartment during a failed raid in March 2020.
Though his bullets didn’t hit anyone, the jury ruled his actions deprived Taylor of her constitutional rights under federal law.

DOJ Recommended Only One Day in Prison
The Justice Department under the Trump administration pushed for a minimal sentence—just one day in prison.
That recommendation, signed by political appointees, argued Hankison wasn’t directly responsible for Taylor’s death.
Judge Slams DOJ Recommendation as Inappropriate
U.S. District Judge Rebecca Grady Jennings rejected the DOJ’s request, calling it an improper response to the verdict.
She stated that no prison time was “not appropriate” considering Hankison’s reckless use of force during the raid.
Breonna Taylor’s Family Calls DOJ Stance an ‘Insult’
Taylor’s family criticized the one-day recommendation, calling it a betrayal of justice and the jury’s decision. They believe Hankison’s sentence brings some accountability, but not enough to match the harm caused.

Breonna Taylor’s Death Fueled National Outrage
Taylor was a 26-year-old Black EMT who died in a no-knock raid based on a flawed warrant on March 13, 2020.
Her death became a flashpoint for racial justice protests, joining other tragic cases like George Floyd and Elijah McClain.
Hankison Was Only Officer Convicted in the Case
Several officers were involved in the raid, but Hankison is the only one convicted so far for actions during the incident.
Other officers still face federal charges over the mishandling of the search warrant that led to the deadly raid.
Mixed Reactions Follow Sentencing Decision
Some view the 33-month sentence as a small step toward police accountability in a broken system.
Others question the Justice Department’s approach and whether it tried to downplay Hankison’s responsibility.
What Brett Hankison’s Sentence Means for Justice Reform
The ruling could shape future cases involving police use of force and civil rights violations.
It also sends a message that reckless behavior—even without a direct fatal shot—can lead to federal prison time.
Why This Story Still Matters Today
Breonna Taylor’s case sparked a national reckoning with race and policing in America. Even years later, her name remains a powerful symbol in the fight for racial justice and police accountability.
