*For the first time, Eddie Murphy offers an unfiltered look at the remarkable trajectory of his career in the Netflix documentary “Being Eddie,” set to premiere on November 12.
Per Netflix’s Tudum, the film traces his evolution from a teenage comic sensation to a “Saturday Night Live” breakout, stand-up phenomenon, and box-office superstar. Murphy invites audiences into his home and personal life, providing a rare glimpse at nearly 50 years of entertainment history.
Director and two-time Oscar winner Angus Wall (“The Social Network,” “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”) emphasized Murphy’s singular status: “There is no one else like him. Nobody. He’s been famous longer than just about anyone alive, and he’s never lost who he is. He has survived it all with grace. How did he do that? What guides him? We chase all of these questions with him.”

Wall added, “There’s a great clip of Eddie on a talk show early on in his career, talking about how he’s always been able to do impersonations and different voices. He talks about how his mom used to ask him, ‘Who’s Eddie? What voice is Eddie’s voice?’ This movie answers that question. Eddie has played a lot of different characters over the last 40-plus years, but he has never played himself onscreen before. He opens up his world and his heart and I think people are going to really enjoy spending time with him.”
“Being Eddie” highlights Murphy’s ability to captivate audiences across generations, showcasing his work in comedy, action, drama, animation, musicals, and family films. Friends, collaborators, and fellow comedians—including Arsenio Hall, Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle, Jamie Foxx, Jerry Seinfeld, Kevin Hart, Pete Davidson, Tracee Ellis Ross, and Tracy Morgan—reflect on his groundbreaking “Saturday Night Live” era, stand-up films like “Raw,” ’80s hits such as “Beverly Hills Cop,” “Coming to America,” and “Trading Places,” ’90s favorites like “The Nutty Professor,” the “Shrek” series in the 2000s, and his Oscar-nominated role in “Dreamgirls.”
“Eddie’s somebody that he feels he’s known who he is from the beginning,” Wall tells USA TODAY. “He’s been on a path of destiny since he was a kid. He is an artist where he can express himself through many different ways, not just through comedy or acting, but through music and all these different things.
The documentary is produced by John Davis, John Fox, Charisse Hewitt-Webster, Terry Leonard, and Kent Kubena. Audiences can catch a first look at Murphy’s story through the official trailer — watch it below.
