*The late neo-soul legend D’Angelo was honored on November 1, 2025, during a private celebration of life service held at Saint Paul’s Baptist Church in Henrico, Virginia. The ceremony followed his death on October 14 at age 51 from pancreatic cancer, leaving fans and fellow artists mourning one of music’s most influential voices.
Known for shaping modern R&B through acclaimed albums like “Brown Sugar” and “Voodoo,” D’Angelo—born Michael Eugene Archer—was remembered for his artistry, authenticity, and lasting impact. The service, organized by longtime collaborator Bill McGee and Questlove of The Roots, included a eulogy from Bishop Ralland V. Robinson Sr. and a video message from Pastor Jamal Bryant.
As Ice Cream Convos reports, DJ Premier, who attended the ceremony, voiced frustration after the event when images and videos from the service began circulating online. “Yo, you had to fill out an application to get in and get approved… and before you submit it, it said please don’t post, don’t film, and let’s keep it private,” he said in a video addressing the issue.

The producer criticized those who disregarded the family’s wishes, saying, “People are running amuck all over there posting sh-t, the program, even the cemetery. Fake love is even at your funeral.”
Despite the breach of privacy, he emphasized the emotional significance of the day, adding, “Salute to his whole family who was amazing… Michael Eugene Archer, we love you. D’Angelo forever, man. Into infinity.”
Meanwhile, as we reported earlier, a heartfelt letter from former President Barack Obama was also read during the service, praising D’Angelo’s profound influence. Obama wrote that his music “transcended genres, generations, and expectations,” a reflection of the timeless artistry that defined his life and legacy.
