*A surprising detail about Sean “Diddy” Combs’ acting ambitions has emerged amid the intense legal battle he now faces in federal court. During his sex trafficking trial, it was revealed that Combs once auditioned to portray legendary soul singer James Brown in the 2014 biopic “Get on Up,” a role that ultimately went to the late Chadwick Boseman.
The information came to light during cross-examination of “Mia,” a former assistant of Combs who is testifying under a pseudonym and has accused him of rape and sexual assault, Variety reports. Text messages between Mia and Combs were presented as evidence. In one message dated August 2020, Mia wrote, “Thinking of you with Chadwick Boseman,” referencing the actor’s death. She went on to remind Combs about his previous audition for the James Brown role, telling him she still had the tape and would send it to him.
Mia described the audition effort as more than just a simple reading, it was a weeklong production that suggests Combs was serious about landing the part. While Combs’ bid for the role was ultimately unsuccessful, it revealed a lesser-known aspect of the music mogul’s career aspirations.
This unexpected anecdote surfaced as part of a broader, and far more serious, criminal case against Combs. Federal prosecutors have charged the 55-year-old with sex trafficking, racketeering, and other felony offenses, alleging that he operated a criminal enterprise masked by his music and business ventures. If convicted, Combs could face life in prison.
Court filings describe a sprawling investigation that includes accusations of drug-fueled parties, coercive sex acts, and secret recordings, allegedly orchestrated by Combs and others beginning in 2008. The government is also pursuing an aggressive forfeiture of assets tied to what it describes as the “Combs Business,” which spans liquor brands, fashion lines, Bad Boy Records, and luxury properties in Los Angeles and Miami.

Among the items prosecutors hope to seize: a private jet, multimillion-dollar mansions, rights to iconic music catalogs, and high-value contemporary art pieces. Legal experts note that under the federal RICO statute, the government has wide latitude to confiscate any property connected to criminal activity.
Combs has pleaded not guilty, and his attorneys have labeled the charges a “baseless money grab.” They’ve enlisted experts in forfeiture law to challenge the scope of the prosecution’s asset claims. Meanwhile, the trial continues in Manhattan federal court, placing both Combs’ freedom and his business empire at risk.
