*We caught up with DeWanda Wise and Blair Underwood to discuss their compelling roles in the highly anticipated series “Three Women.”
Based on the bestselling novel by Lisa Taddeo, the series delves into the complex and intimate stories of American female desire and the radical changes these desires spark in the lives of three women. Taddeo shared with Screen Rant that she experienced a whirlwind of emotions upon learning that her book would be adapted into a series.
“There were so many emotions. It was all happening at the same time. Because, I think it might have happened on publication day or a day or two later. So it was a lot of stuff happening at once. Because I’m not all sunshine, I was definitely like, “Oh, God. What does this mean for this and this and this?” I was concerned,” Taddeo said.
“But my first fears would have been Maggie, whose real name is used,” she continued.
“What would that mean for her if her story was on a screen? So that was the main question that came. I had more questions and concerns than I did initial excitement.”
In the limited series, Wise portrays Sloane, a confident entrepreneur in an open marriage with Richard, played by Underwood, whose relationship is tested by two new strangers.
Here’s the official synopsis:
Three Women finds three women on a crash course to radically overturn their lives. Lina (Betty Gilpin), a homemaker in suburban Indiana, is a decade into a passionless marriage when she embarks on an affair that quickly becomes all-consuming and transforms her life. Sloane (Wise), a glamorous entrepreneur in the Northeast, has a committed open marriage with Richard (Underwood), until two sexy new strangers threaten their aspirational love story. Maggie (Gabrielle Creevy), a student in North Dakota, weathers an intense storm after accusing her married English teacher (Jason Ralph) of an inappropriate relationship. Gia (Shailene Woodley), a writer grieving the loss of her family, persuades each of these three spectacular “ordinary” women to tell her their stories, and her relationships with them change the course of her life forever.
“We haven’t seen black folks like this,” Underwood told EUR exclusively about the dynamic between Richard and Sloane.
“The second we cast Blair Underwood, they made my job a whole lot harder,” said Wise, noting that her character was “a great ride” to undertake.
“In the construct of the show, she represented to me and in the book, the greatest challenge because ordinarily when we want an audience to empathize with a character, we throw in some external challenge,” Wise said. “Sloane’s conflict is all internal. So as an actor, to be able to convey that and make sure that the story is as clear as possible to an audience, there’s a lot that happens in the silences. There’s a lot that happens in the intimate moments… between Sloan and Richard… in that relationship and what they don’t say.”
“Three Women” is set to premiere Friday, September 13 at midnight on the STARZ app. On linear, it will debut on STARZ at 10:00 PM ET/PT in the U.S.
