*Denzel Washington recently shared his thoughts on his career and his role in the record-breaking Broadway production of “Othello.” Despite being a two-time Oscar winner, Washington doesn’t see himself as a typical “Hollywood actor.”
In a conversation with CBS’ Bill Whitaker, he discussed the success of the play, which has earned $2.8 million in its first eight performances, Deadline reports. Washington’s history with “Othello” goes back 48 years, when he first portrayed the character at the age of 22. Reflecting on his journey, he said, “48 years of experience, so 48 years of pain and pleasure and life, has informed my approach to playing the role.”
His co-star, Jake Gyllenhaal, added, “Life and death is ever-present in every moment of the show,” acknowledging the intensity of their performances.
The conversation turned to Washington’s thoughts on being labeled a “Hollywood actor.” When Whitaker mentioned how many Hollywood stars were involved in Broadway productions, Washington quickly dismissed the term, saying, “I’m a Mount Vernon actor, I don’t know what Hollywood means, I know it’s a place.”
He explained that while he does films, theater was where he learned his craft.

“I’m a stage actor who does film, it’s not the other way around. I did stage first, I learned how to act on stage not on film,” Washington said.
“Movies are filmmakers medium – you shoot it and then you’re gone on, and they cut it together and add music and do all of that. Theater is an actor’s medium – the curtain goes up and you’re on, ain’t nobody can help you.”
In a separate interview with Today, Washington shared his future plans, including his role in the “Othello” production at 70. He mentioned his involvement in several upcoming projects, such as playing Hannibal, a film with Steve McQueen, and possibly returning to “Black Panther” before retiring.
“I played Othello at 22. I am about to play Othello at 70. After that, I am playing Hannibal. After that, I’ve been talking to Steve McQueen about a film. After that, Ryan Coogler is writing a part for me in the next ‘Black Panther’,” he told the outlet.
“After that, I’m going to do the film ‘Othello,’ After that, I’m going to do King Lear. After that, I’m going to retire.”
