*Shane Tamura, who killed four people at the NFL’s New York headquarters, was posthumously diagnosed with CTE, the NYC Medical Examiner confirmed.
The tragic shooting claimed four lives and left one person injured. Tamura, 27, died by suicide after the July 28 attack. As ESPN reports, the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner recently confirmed “unambiguous diagnostic evidence” of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in Tamura’s brain tissue, a condition only diagnosable after death.
Tamura, a former high school football player in Los Angeles, played running back and defensive back but never competed professionally. A note found in his wallet revealed he suspected he had CTE and requested posthumous brain testing. The medical examiner’s findings identified “low-stage CTE,” tying his history of head trauma to the disease.

The victims were identified as off-duty officer Didarul Islam, real estate executive Wesley LePatner of Blackstone, Rudin Management associate Julia Hyman, and security officer Aland Etienne. Tamura also injured an NFL employee, according to law enforcement. Mayor Eric Adams stated Tamura targeted the NFL due to his belief that he suffered from CTE, TMZ reports.
The NFL issued a statement: “We continue to grieve the senseless loss of lives, and our hearts remain with the victims’ families and our dedicated employees. There is no justification for the horrific acts that took place. As the medical examiner notes, ‘the science around this condition continues to evolve, and the physical and mental manifestations of CTE remain under study’.”
According to ESPN, Tamura had a history of mental health struggles, including two Las Vegas police wellness checks. In 2022, his mother reported suicidal thoughts and treatment for depression, concussions, migraines, and insomnia. A family source told ESPN he worked in private security and casino surveillance in Nevada, where he received injections for headaches. In 2024, he was placed on a mental health hold.
