*Chance the Rapper has carved a unique path in hip-hop, thriving as an independent artist in an industry dominated by major labels.
His upcoming album, “Star Line,” and the “And We Back Tour” showcase his unwavering commitment to creative control. The Chicago-born artist has never shied away from taking risks, and being an independent artist comes with a price.
“It’s a gamble. I’ve gotta really bet on myself, so I do go broke all the time, you know what I mean. And I do be up all the time,” Chance shared in an interview on “Effective Immediately.”
Maintaining a close relationship with fans is central to Chance’s strategy. He constantly evaluates whether his music, merchandise, and engagement resonate with his audience.
“When you bet on yourself, you’re really betting on yourself, and it really comes down to, like, are my fans willing to support? Am I doing the things that’s ‘gon make my fans want to support?” he explained. This direct connection fosters authenticity but also demands accountability, as every decision, from singles to samples, rests on his shoulders.

The absence of a middleman brings both freedom and pressure. “The fact that there’s not somebody else that’s in control and deciding when I do radio tours, and when [I] drop a single… It’s all up to me,” Chance noted.
Chance’s journey underscores the power of betting on oneself. While the risks are real, the rewards, creative freedom, fan loyalty, and personal growth make it worthwhile.
Chance’s latest album, “Star Line,” drops Friday (Aug. 15).
