*The 56th Annual NAACP Image Awards lit up Pasadena on Saturday, February 22, 2025, with an electrifying blend of glamour, history, and forward-thinking empowerment.
This star-studded event celebrated the artistic and social legacies that have shaped Hollywood and beyond, uniting generations of talent in a night that was both reflective and inspiring.
One of the evening’s most moving tributes was reserved for the iconic Wayans Family.
Renowned for their groundbreaking contributions to comedy, film and television, the Wayans were honored for not only their timeless humor but also for their commitment to opening doors for future talent.
In a deeply moving moment, former Vice President Kamala Harris was presented with the Chairman’s Award by NAACP Board of Directors Chairman Leon Russell. The award, reserved for individuals who have demonstrated exceptional public service, was a fitting tribute to Harris’s lifelong commitment to justice and equality. In her acceptance speech, Harris paid homage to the NAACP’s storied legacy and the pioneering work of W.E.B. Du Bois, urging everyone in attendance to maintain a sense of urgency in these challenging times. “We must not lose sight of the power of collective action and the responsibility each of us bears in shaping a more just future,” she proclaimed to an inspired audience.
EUR was on the red carpet and spoke with actress Essence Atkins, a longtime collaborator with the Wayans Family on the Marlon Wayans helmed “Marlon and currently with Damon Wayans Sr. and Jr. on “Poppa’s House,” who shared what made the night so special for her. Atkins shared,
“I’m here for that moment. I’m here because I plan to make a whole fool of myself shouting for them. This is well deserved. This is about time and this is about not just a legacy of comedic genius, but it’s also about a legacy of empowering others. This is a legacy of holding the door open, keeping it open, propping it open, making sure it stays open, and making sure that everyone in the room has the excellence and the work ethic to stay in the room. Because we can give people opportunities, but we can’t necessarily give them the ability to sustain it if we don’t train them up in the way that they should go, and that’s what the Wayans have done.”
Another rising star of the night, “Power Book II: Ghost” actor Michael Rainey Jr., was humbled by his win. Reflecting on the honor, he shared:

“It feels crazy to go from Tariq just saying hi and bye on the screen, being super crazy, to them giving me the torch to carry on the greatness of the show they created and trusted me.”
In a surprising twist, Keke Palmer stunned the audience by winning Entertainer of the Year, outshining even fierce competition such as Cynthia Ervio for the musical “Wicked.” Palmer’s victory resonated as a testament to her dynamic talent and fearless presence in an ever-evolving industry.
Adding to the night’s emotional depth, twenty-two Altadena residents, displaced by last month’s tragic Eaton Fire, took the stage alongside Los Angeles native Morris Chestnut. Their appearance was met with a standing ovation, a poignant reminder that the NAACP Image Awards also stand as a beacon of community support and resilience.
The 56th Annual NAACP Image Awards was much more than a celebration of entertainment—it was an homage to legacy, empowerment, and the relentless pursuit of excellence.
