*During a lively segment on Tamron Hall’s talk show, former NFL quarterback Cam Newton found himself in a playful tug-of-war with the host over a sensitive topic: his past earnings.
As EW reports, Hall brought up a reported figure, asking, “Your contract was 11 years, $133 million?” Newton, visibly caught off guard, leaned forward, whispering a long “shhh” as he tried to steer the conversation away from the unconfirmed number, which has circulated widely online. The exchange set the tone for a spirited back-and-forth.
Hall, undeterred, teased Newton further, saying, “I’m not in your pockets!” while he continued to shush her with a grin. “We’ve got some people listening to this. Some letters, some letters listening to this,” Newton said, hinting at the IRS or others who might take an interest in such figures. When Hall pressed on, citing a quick Google search that suggested a $130 million deal, Newton interjected, declaring, “The devil is a liar! The devil been a liar!”
Attempting to pivot, Hall summarized, “Let me say this: Eleven years and a lot of zeros. We’ll leave it at that.” Newton, ever quick-witted, countered, “No, no, no, no, no, just put commas, because the zeros can be behind the decimal, and nobody cares about them!”
When Hall questioned her research, asking, “Okay, so you didn’t make $133 million, and you’re not a media mogul? None of this research I’ve done is accurate?” Newton replied, “I’m not saying that, I’m saying I’m just a content creator.”
Newton also used the platform to promote his latest venture, the BET series “106 & Sports,” which he hosts alongside journalist Ashley Nicole Moss. The show, a reimagining of BET’s iconic “106 & Park,” blends sports, music, and entertainment, with its debut season of 10 episodes airing Wednesdays through December 17. Newton previosuly shared his excitement, stating, “When I think about 106 & Park, I remember how it was a voice for the culture. It gave artists and fans a place to connect. Now, we’re doing the same thing for sports.”
The series, produced by Fulwell Entertainment’s SpringHill, aims to be a “definitive home for culturally-driven sports commentary,” according to BET, and is available for streaming on BET+ the day after each broadcast.
The interview wrapped with Newton extending an invitation to Hall to appear as a guest on “106 & Sports.”
