*As Vice President Kamala Harris launched her campaign as the presumptive Democratic nominee, Black journalists Roland Martin and Ed Gordon played key roles.
Martin and Gordon were involved in fundraising efforts that raised millions in the campaign’s first week, according to journal-isms.com.
On Sunday, Win With Black Women held a Zoom call that drew 44,000 participants and raised over $1.5 million. The following day, Win With Black Men attracted nearly 54,000 attendees and raised $1.3 million. Additional virtual events included a Latinas for Harris call with 5,000 attendees raising $110,000, a South Asian Women for Harris call with 10,000 participants raising $285,000, and a large Zoom call for white women, which reportedly raised $2 million from 164,000 attendees.
Other calls for Black gay and queer men, white men, and a national Women for Harris event reportedly are planned.
Additionally, Gordon co-hosted an NAACP “Town Hall” discussing Black voters’ importance in the election, which followed President Biden’s endorsement of Harris.

Over 20,000 Black men joined the Win with Black Men meeting hosted and streamed by Martin and his Black Star Network “in support of Harris’ historic campaign,” Rayna Reid Rayford reported Wednesday for Essence.
Rayford added, “After the call, Martin posted on X, “I have no words. And not just because I’m tired. My @BlkStarNetwork just told me that 53,862 people registered for our #WinWithBlackMen video call. We raised $1.3M and counting from 17,000 donors.”
Meanwhile, per Journal-isms, “Word in Black, a three-year-old online news collaboration of 10 of the most well-known Black newspapers in America, “wholeheartedly, and without question endorse Vice President Kamala Harris for the next president of the United States,” the group announced Friday,” the outlet writes.
We reported earlier that Harris seems poised to secure the Democratic nomination after President Joe Biden withdrew from the presidential race and threw his support behind her.
“I am honored to have the President’s endorsement and my intention is to earn and win this nomination,” she said in a statement after Biden’s endorsement, NBC News reports.
“I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party—and unite our nation—to defeat Donald Trump and his extreme Project 2025 agenda,” Haris added.
