*Billboard celebrated Black Music Month and Juneteenth by unveiling its list of the 75 Best R&B Singers of All Time, spotlighting artists who have shaped the genre through vocal prowess, cultural influence, and commercial success.
The ranking showcases a diverse array of talent, from mid-20th-century trailblazers to contemporary stars, evaluated on six criteria: vocal ability, catalog quality, career longevity, industry achievements, game-changing influence, and lasting impact. Notably, songwriting was not heavily weighted, and artists primarily known for group work were excluded to focus on solo careers.
Stevie Wonder tops Billboard’s list of the greatest R&B stars, celebrated for a six-decade career that seamlessly blends soul, pop, funk, and jazz. Aretha Franklin, the legendary “Queen of Soul,” takes the second spot. In third is Michael Jackson, honored for his evolution from Jackson 5 frontman to global R&B and pop icon.
Beyoncé ranks fourth, having transformed from Destiny’s Child lead singer to a solo powerhouse with 35 Grammy wins. Whitney Houston follows at number five, remembered for her soaring four-octave range and chart-topping hits that set a new standard for vocal excellence.
The full list captures the evolution of R&B, shaped in recent years by the influence of streaming platforms and changing listener tastes.

Billboard’s editorial team compiled the list. The outlet writes:
Staff discussions on how to go about determining the entries and rankings were, to say the least, heated. Helping to fuel these illuminating and sometimes raucous discourses were generational debates over old school vs. new school. At the same time, “Mount Rushmore” debates were also raging on the social media front, as fans weighed in on which R&B artists — like Jackson, Chris Brown, Luther Vandross, R. Kelly and Usher — truly deserve to have their images carved in stone for all time.
In the end, Billboard staffers agreed on the following criteria: vocal prowess, body of work, career longevity, industry achievements, game-changing influence and enduring generational/cultural impact. While some singers who made the list are also known for their lyrical skills, songwriting wasn’t a major deciding factor in this instance. And legendary singers best known for fronting groups versus their solo work were not included — which means a ranking of the best R&B groups of all time is no doubt in the offing.
Billboard’s inclusive approach underscores the diversity of voices that have defined R&B, from its soulful origins to its current innovations, ensuring a comprehensive tribute to the genre’s legacy and future.
